Why Custom Formulation?

The Hanson Group’s unique custom formulation capabilities set us apart. Here’s why custom formulation could be the route for you:

What is custom formulation for Polyurea?

Custom formulation refers to tailoring the chemical makeup of a polyurea coating to meet specific performance needs of a project or application. Instead of using a “one-size-fits-all” product off the shelf, chemists adjust the resin blend, isocyanate type, additives, pigments and reactivity profile to suit what’s best for the client.

Why choose custom formulation over off-the-shelf?

While off-the-shelf polyurea might be suitable for general use, many industries – such as marine, industrial, defense and sports – demand high performance coatings.

What do custom formulations do that off-the-shelf products don’t?

  • Designed for specific environmental conditions: These custom batches can be designed to withstand harsh environments, including coastal applications (salt spray), immersion, chemical resistance, and others.

  • Meet targeted mechanical properties: Specific characteristics can be the focus of custom formulations such as:

    • Hardness or flexibility

    • Abrasion resistance

    • Elongation or tensile strength

    • Cure time

  • Integrate specialty additives: Additives like antimicrobial agents, fire retardants, antioxidants, and UV stabilizers can be incorporated.

    • EXAMPLE: A playground surface might need a soft, textured, UV-stable finish with antimicrobial properties.

  • Ensure compatibility with unique substrates: Not all polyurea bond equally well to different substrates. Custom formulation ensures optimal adhesion and performance based on the surface you are coating.

  • Solve real-world problems: The biggest value? Custom polyurea formulations solve problems that generic coatings can’t. Whether it’s increasing equipment life or meeting safety codes, custom formulations offer performance tailored for the application.
